Fourteen people were killed and several injured when a bus hit a goat and veered off a road near Cape Town last night, police said today.

The accident happened outside the Western Cape province town of Malmesbury, about 50 kilometres north of Cape Town. "Twelve people, including two children died on the scene. A boy, aged between 8 and 10, and a girl, aged around 17, later died in hospital," a police spokesman said.

Shortly after the bus overturned, a passing motorist stopped to help, but a second car driving towards the accident scene crashed into the woman's vehicle.

She was not harmed, but two people in the second vehicle were injured and taken to hospital along with 13 bus passengers.
