Explosive device found in Athlone


An explosive device found at a house in Co Westmeath earlier today has been made safe by Army bomb disposal experts.

The device was found at a private resident in Sli an Coiste, Monksland, Athlone at about 9.45am.

An army bomb disposal team arrived on scene a short time after and examined and removed the explosive to a safe location.

The device was later made safe through the use of a controlled explosion on waste ground in the Athlone area.

<br/> The scene was declared safe at 10.30am.</p> <p>This is the 68th call out and the 21st viable improvised explosive device made safe by Army bomb disposal teams so far this year.</p>
