An explosive device found at a house in Co Westmeath earlier today has been made safe by Army bomb disposal experts.

An explosive device found at a house in Co Westmeath earlier today has been made safe by Army bomb disposal experts.

The device was found at a private resident in Sli an Coiste, Monksland, Athlone at about 9.45am.

An army bomb disposal team arrived on scene a short time after and examined and removed the explosive to a safe location.

The device was later made safe through the use of a controlled explosion on waste ground in the Athlone area.

The scene was declared safe at 10.30am.

This is the 68th call out and the 21st viable improvised explosive device made safe by Army bomb disposal teams so far this year.
