The Football Association of Ireland (FAI) is demanding an urgent meeting with the Taoiseach following the Government¿s decision to rule out state funding to build the National Stadium.
The Association believes there will be serious consequences for football in Ireland resulting from the stadium's demise and intend holding talks with the Government to discuss its commitment to football in the country.
The Minister for Finance, Mr. McCreevy, announced earlier that proposed developmental funding of major sporting bodies is under review, a move which has angered the FAI.
"Formal commitments were made by the Government in relation to funding football in Ireland and these can not be reneged upon," said an association spokesman.
"These funds go directly to the clubs and associations throughout the country and are, at minimum, essential to the maintenance of the development of the game."
The FAI will also meet with the Irish Rugby Football Union (IRFU) to discuss areas of joint co-operation.
