Court finds British mother guilty of killing babies

British woman Angela Cannings has been jailed for life after being convicted of the murder of her two baby sons.

British woman Angela Cannings has been jailed for life after being convicted of the murder of her two baby sons.

Cannings (38), convicted at Winchester Crown Court, closed her eyes as the jury delivered the verdicts that she smothered seven-week-old Jason in June 1991 and 18-week-old Matthew in November 1999.

As the verdicts were delivered, Cannings's family and friends in the public gallery shouted out in shock and despair, and many ran from the courtroom in tears.

Mrs Justice Heather Hallett expressed regret that she had no option but to impose the mandatory sentence.

She told Cannings: "There was no medical evidence before the court that suggested there was anything wrong with you when you killed your children. I have no doubt that for a woman like you to suffocate these babies there must have been something seriously wrong with you.

"You wanted these babies and you cherished them; it's no coincidence, in my view, that you committed these acts in the weeks after their births".

Mrs Justice Hallett said: "It's not my decision to ask when you will be released but I intend to make it known in my remarks that in my own view you will never be a threat to anyone in the future".
