Farmleigh, the former Guinness estate acquired by the State for £23 million, is to be officially opened at the end of the month with a concert in the grounds by the National Symphony Orchestra.

The Office of Public Works (OPW) has spent £18 million renovating the main house and grounds. The Government will use the estate to entertain visiting dignitaries and as a venue for national and international meetings.

The estate will also be open to the public on a limited number of days each year, when sporting, musical, educational or cultural events will be staged.

Strict planning conditions have been imposed on the numbers who may attend these events.

A ticket-only opening ceremony will be held on Saturday, July 28th, with a concert by the National Symphony Orchestra. The Taoiseach, Mr Ahern, will perform the official opening.

The 79-acre Farmleigh estate is in the north-west corner of the Phoenix Park, near Chapelizod and Castleknock.

Some residents' groups objected to the OPW's plans to open the estate to the public, claiming it would cause traffic disruption.

A planning application to run educational and cultural events at the estate each year was lodged with Fingal County Council in November 1999. Around 80 objections were lodged. However, there was no appeal to An Bord Pleanala when permission was granted by the council last March.

Strict planning conditions state the OPW must submit a traffic management plan before events are held.

Tickets for the opening concert will be offered through competitions in the media, a spokeswoman for the OPW said.
