Ireland’s only dedicated whale and dolphin research vessel has been returned to the water after spending seven months in dry dock undergoing an extensive refit programme.

Celtic Mist, the yacht once owned by former taoiseach Charlie Haughey, arrived in its new home in Co Clare a year ago after the vessel was donated to the Irish Whale and Dolphin Group by the Haughey family.

The 17-metre steel-hulled ketch will be used for research and surveying for whales, dolphins and other marine wildlife. It will also be used for training people to carry out marine surveys, including the use of acoustic monitoring with towed hydrophones. It will set sail again on August 12th from Kilrush Creek marina.

Whale and dolphin group director Dr Simon Berrow said: “There is still considerable work to be done, with the masts and rigging to be inspected and replaced where necessary and painting, sanding, varnishing and more painting to be completed.”

As part of the refurbishment Charlie Haughey’s old bedroom and bathroom were ripped out to accommodate additional crew berths. Kerry-based wildlife artist Michael O’Cleary has also completed a colour mural on the hull of the yacht, while large lettering will also identify Celtic Mist.

After the vessel was donated by the Haughey family, the group applied to the Clare Local Development Company for EU-backed Leader funding for the project and secured €47,900, which accounts for the 75 per cent of the cost.
