At least 25 people were killed and 60 injured today in a road collision involving two passenger buses in Pakistan's central Punjab province, police said.

"We have recovered 25 bodies and the death toll is likely to go up," said Mr Tahir Masood, police chief of Rahimyar Khan district where the accident occurred.

Sixty people with injuries were taken to hospital as a major rescue operation was underway, he added.

Up to 100 passengers were traveling in the two buses, which were running parallel on a highway when they rounded a bend and slammed head on into a truck coming from the opposite direction.
