Newcastle United have signed Lee Bowyer after the player passed a medical examination at the club last night.

The 26-year-old put pen to paper at St James' Park this morning on a four-year, £30,000-a-week contract to become Bobby Robson's first close-season signing.

Bowyer, who has one England cap, has joined the club on afree transfer.

He played for relegated West Ham United from January last season after leaving Leeds United.

Bowyer, however, will not be involved in Newcastle's Champions League qualifying campaign as he has to serve a six match European ban.
