NIGERIA: Bono has decried corruption in African politics - telling finance ministers in Nigeria that they must strive for "more transparency, not more bribes".

He was speaking at a conference in the capital, Abuja, just days after the US state department called on Nigeria to make anti-corruption policy a priority. "When we ask where all these oil profits are going, we ought to ask where they often come from," the U2 singer said. "Every corrupt transaction involves two parties, maybe more."

Nigeria is Africa's largest oil producer, but many of its people say the oil profits fail to trickle down. Bono added that western nations needed to keep their pledges of debt relief, malaria eradication and education for African nations.
