Arafat begins talks with Mubarak in Cairo

Palestinian leader Mr Yasser Arafat and Egyptian President Mr Hosni Mubarak began talks in Cairo this morning.

They areexpected to focus on escalating Palestinian-Israeli violence.

Mr Arafat, who arrived yesterday from the Jordanian capital Amman, was meeting with Mr Mubarak at the presidential palace in northern Cairo, sources at the palace said.

The two leaders are expected to hold talks on the "dangerous situation" in the Middle East, where Palestinians are faced with an "Israeli military escalation," Mr Arafat's top aide Mr Nabil Abu Rudeina said.

They are also due to discuss the results of the Egyptian President'srecent visit to the United States and his talks with President George WBush.

Mr Mubarak had urged the US administration to take a more active role in bringing Israel and the Palestinians back to the negotiating table and in efforts to end the violence.
