A suspected al-Qaida member carrying explosives has blown himself up after being cornered by Yemeni security forces.

Sameer al-Hada, 25, was being chased by Yemeni security forces and stopped for questioning when he threatened police with a hand grenade, police said.

The grenade exploded in his hand, killing him instantly. No security forces were injured.

The incident happened in a suburb of the Yemeni capital, San'a.

Yemeni police officials said that they had learned about al-Hada from the landlord of his house, located nearby the San'a University.

According to the police, the lease for the al-Hada's rented home had ended and his landlord asked him for documents to renew the contract.

Al-Hada did not provide the documents and the landlord informed the police.

The police began inquiries and learned he was an active al-Qaida member in Yemen and that he had also been to Afghanistan. They did not specify when he was there.
