Election round-up: Taoiseach Bertie Ahern attended a party briefing this morning that focuses on the contentious issue of health.

As nurses escalated their industrial action and hospital consultants are expected to vote for a campaign of action, Mr Ahern was joined by Brian Lenihan, Mary Hanafin, and Seamus Brennan.

Mr Ahern used the briefing to outline his proposals to break the deadlock in the nurses' dispute with health service employers.

This afternoon Mr Ahern visits the Battle of the Boyne site near Drogheda to meet Northern Ireland First Minister the Rev Ian Paisley.

Labour is focusing on its plan for fairer housing during a press briefing by party leader Pat Rabbitte and spokesman on the environment Eamon Gilmore. The Labour plan will discuss the plight of many young couples who are unable to afford to buy a house and will emphasise the party's "Begin to Buy" scheme.

Fine Gael is talking about their plans to provide free GP visits to all children under the age of five. Party leader Enda Kenny is touring Kerry and Cork.

Green Party health spokesman John Gormley, social and family affairs spokesman Dan Boyle and candidate for Wicklow Cllr Deirdre de Burca will set out their priorities for older people.

Progressive Democrats transport spokesman Senator Tom Morrissey will set out his party's priorities for commuters with its "Access All Stations" initiative. PD leader Michael McDowell will attend the Battle of the Boyne event. Later he will be canvassing in Meath East.

Sinn Féin education spokesman Sean Crowe will set out the party's priorities for public investment in early education, support for multi-denominational and special needs education, and educational equality for Traveller children.
