OVER 100 million EU citizens take part in sporting activities. Even more people enjoy watching them, and around 1.5 per cent of the EU's GDP comes from sport. However, the Treaty does not refer to sport, a situation which Doris Pack (D, EPP) would like to see addressed. She wants an explicit reference to sport in Article 128 of the new Treaty. She also called for the Commission to set up a task force on sport to draw up a comprehensive action plan for the EU in the field. The task force should ensure that the Commission takes account of sport across the entire spectrum of its activities; implements an awareness and promotion campaign geared to women's sport, and draws a clear line between professional and amateur sportsmen.
