Contraband cigarettes worth an estimated €2.9 million were seized by Revenue's Customs Service at Dublin Port yesterday.

Contraband cigarettes worth an estimated €2.9 million were seized by Revenue's Customs Service at Dublin Port yesterday.

The 7.6 million Capital- and Master-branded cigarettes were contained in a shipment described as furniture that arrived into the port from Zeebrugge in Belgium.

The cigarettes were discovered when the consignment was examined during a routine scan with a mobile scanner.

An Irish-registered commercial vehicle and a trailer were seized by Revenue officers, and they also questioned the driver.

The haul brings to 80.8 million the total amount of contraband cigarettes seized by Revenue in 2012, as part of an ongoing operation tackling the smuggling and sale of illegal cigarettes.
