Vienna - At least 40,000 people marched through the streets of Vienna to protest against plans by Austria's rightwing government to overhaul the social security system, police said.

The demonstration, gathering protesters from across the small Alpine republic, was the first to be organised by the Austrian national trade union OeGB, the umbrella body for 14 unions, since it was established in 1870.
