Crete - The Greek coast guard rescued 263 Iraqi Kurds, including 123 children, who were stranded on a wooden fishing boat in rough seas off Crete, police said yesterday.
They said the boat was spotted off the southern Crete town of Paliochora on Wednesday and was taken to port, where authorities discovered the Kurds crammed in the hull, many suffering from dehydration. The Kurds told police they had each paid the captain £3,000 for the illegal trip to Crete.
