Twenty years after John De Lorean's sports car empire in Belfast ended in ruin (and a prison sentence), a British consortium is looking at building the world's most expensive luxury car in south Wales.

Project Zircon would initially see 100 of the cars produced. Professor Garel Rhys of Cardiff University, who has carried out a feasibility study on the project, says: "In many ways it's easier to say you're going to fail because the entire post-war history of such projects is littered with failures. What sets this apart is the very sensible attitude towards finance."

Specification levels are getting higher and higher even in the entry level segments.
