VOLKSWAGEN HAS released details on its new Golf BlueMotion – the highlight in a new range of more economical Golfs, about to join the line-up.

The new range will use the 1.6-litre common rail diesel engine, with either 90bhp or 105bhp. The Golf BlueMotion uses the 105bhp version and makes gains in fuel economy from a five-speed gearbox that has longer ratios for third, fourth and fifth, as well as regenerative braking.

It also benefits from optimised aerodynamics, a lower ride height and low-rolling resistance tyres. The upshot is a claimed fuel economy of 4.1L/100km with CO2 emissions of 107g/km .

Volkswagen says a second phase of Golf BlueMotion models will be introduced at the end of 2009 and these will have CO2 emissions of less than 100g/km.
