DUBLIN construction company Pierse Contracting won the residential prize at the European Building/CIF Construction Excellence awards last weekend. The company took the honours for an apartment development at Bride Street carried out for Dublin Corporation.

In the commercial section, Ascon beat off stiff competition to secure the award for its work as the main contractor on the Dun Laoghaire Harbour ferry terminal.

Michael McNamara won the education/healthcare prize for a student centre at UCC.

O'Gorman Construction picked up the heritage and restoration award for Clonmel Courthouse in Co Tipperary. Duggan Brothers won the leisure and tourism prize for its work on St Andrew's Church in Suffolk Street, Dublin, which is now Dublin Tourism's headquarters.

North Kerry Landfill at Muingnaminnane was adjudged the best civil engineering project while the Dublin House built in Japan won the award in the sub-contractor category for Century Homes.

The former Taoiseach, Charles Haughey, was honoured at the function for his contribution to the construction industry. He was praised for his introduction of the Section 23 tax reliefs as well as for his contribution to the Custom House Docks development, Government Buildings and the Royal Hospital.
