Complexion perfection

BEAUTY:If you want a quick spring fix, look no further than Lancôme counters. Artistic director Aaron de Mey has given the brand a modern twist. Pop Petrol – a gorgeous blue/green for eyes that suits all colourings – is an instant hit, from €16.50.

Take a lighter approach with your foundation for a fresh-faced look. Some suggestions follow, but first, a few ground rules. Exfoliate regularly to ensure a fresh complexion. I’m a fan of the Daily Microfoliant from Dermalogica (€46). The powdered rice grains gently polish skin for a super clean and radiant finish. For stockists, tel: 1800-556785.

HYDRATEKeep skin moisturised for a glowing finish. If time allows, apply a nourishing mask such as Vitamin E Mask from The Body Shop (€11.50) or one of the great hydrating masks from Sisley.

ILLUMINATEThe "lit from within" look is a make-up artist's trick that is easily copied. Luminous Make Up Base from Giorgio Armani (€40) enhances skin, provides SPF and holds make-up. It is available in a range of shades.

CONCEALDon't make the mistake of trying to cover up imperfections with foundation – that's what concealer is for. You need a specific product for the eye area (inner corner is very important) and for covering up less-than-perfect skin. Apply with a brush and set into skin by patting with the tip of your ring finger. Apart from any blemishes, around the nose and chin area usually need the most help. Lancôme La Touche Pro (€30) combines both functions in a skin perfecting duo. Two shades can be combined to find the perfect match for your skin, or use the lighter shade around eyes, and the darker for nose and chin. The double-ended applicator brush deserves extra marks.

PERFECTVichy combines skincare with colour in Aera Teint Pure Foundation (€18). It comes in two formulas for either dry or nomal/combination skins, has a long-lasting effects. From pharmacies.

No Foundation Foundation (€50) is the brainchild of one of the world’s best-known dermatologists, Dr Perricone. Designed to keep skin looking dewy and flawless, its formula is so sophisticated that it only comes in one shade, which adapts to any skin colour. From Harvey Nichols, Dundrum, Dublin 14.

The new skincare range from Boots No 7, Lift and Luminate, is rumoured to be the next Protect and Perfect. Directed at mature skin, the foundation contains a brightening complex which minimises pores, giving a smooth medium coverage. It comes in six shades and costs €21 – available from Boots pharmacies.

Organic skincare manufacturers Phyt’s has just developed a small range of make-up. Fluid Foundation (€33.60) gives skin an even glow, with the bonus of a delectably fresh scent. Tel: 01-4978833 for stockists.

Max Factor Second Skin (€21.50) is a super natural formula containing 60 per cent water – close to your skin’s water content. Featherweight texture provides coverage without a heavy finish.

Dreamy Creamy from Maybelline (€12.49) hydrates skin and blends seamlessly for a really fresh look. Ingredients are whipped together to combine and the solid texture transforms to a liquid on application for a flawless finish.

Finally, Clarins Hydrating Tinted Moisturiser (€31) in Blond gives a perfect healthy glow, and Crème de la Mer’s Tinted Moisturiser (€91) is fabulous. If you can afford it, it’s worth it, as it provides treatment and make-up simultaneously.
