Skream

"What now?" is the question Croydon dubstep innovator Oliver "Skream" Jones no doubt pondered as prepared his second album. Jones remains the scene's kingpin (his La Roux Bulletproof remix is one of the few dubstep/pop hybrids that actually clicked), but dubstep itself is now even more splintered and deconstructed than it was when he dropped his debut album in 2006. Jones's answer is to gather his pulses, effects and beats, move away from dubstep's bass odyssey, and head to an entirely different playing pitch. Thus, you have Skream flirting with pop (La Roux's Elly Jackson becomes an eerie, alien diva on Finally), low-slung hip-hop (8 Bit Baby with Murs) and r'n'b ( Where You Should Be). But Jones is still capable of crafting bangers, and both Wibbler and Listening to the Records on My Wall are full-throttle techy wonders. See myspace.com/ skeamuk
