The Pythagoreans believed that the cosmos was a musical instrument playing a beautiful, harmonious tune, but their universe was a neat affair by our standards, with no chaos or quantum theory in it. We know better now. If the universe is indeed making its own noise, it probably sounds more like the group assembled here by Danish guitarist Mark Solborg. Pure improvisation may sound less than beautifully harmonious to some, but in the hands of experienced musicians ( the group includes the grand master of free improvisation, English saxophonist Evan Parker) it can become a channel for a kind of universal music. Most will run screaming from the room at the very thought, but for those whose ears are attuned to the unexpected, Solborg's music will strike a deep chord. solborg.dk
