After establishing his career with Ridley Scott's A Good Year, Body of Lies, Robin Hoodand American Gangster, Marc Streitenfeld now scores this indie feature by Scott's son Jake. Combining simple melodies, warm instrumental colours (banjo, cello, piano and violin) and sinuous electronic percussion with folk, blues and jazz motifs (including whispered scatting), Streitenfeld creates a remarkably intimate and evocative score for this film about a couple coming to terms with the loss of their daughter. Welcome to the Rileysemphasises atmosphere over character, striking a delicate balance between dramatic urgency and lyrical intensity (a recurrent motif is an off-kilter lullaby) and achieves a surprising complexity of mood and tone, at once brooding and radiant.
