There are, as we're finding out with every passing release, many sides to Deerhunter's sound. Just as the audacious and immediate avant-garde pop on their last album (Microcastle) won the Atlanta band many plaudits and new fans, intriguing and often enthralling soundscapes make their fourth album such a delight with every repeat listen. Band leader Bradford Cox usually commands most of the limelight, but much of the dazzle here can be put down to guitarist Lockett Pundt and his beautiful ability to underline a song's psychedelic drawl. (Something Pundt also does on his Lotus Plaza side-project.) Cox croons and swings with aplomb throughout, ensuring that the sublime Desire Lines, He Would Have Laughedand Revivalare blissed-out, spacey and bittersweet artefacts from the timeless pop capsule.
