Amsterdam to Rio on cooking oil

LAST WEEK KLM operated KL705 – the longest ever biofuel flight from Amsterdam to Rio de Janeiro for the Rio+20 conference. The Boeing 777-200 for the 9,700km trip was fuelled by bio-kerosene made from used cooking oil by fuel company SkyNRG. A number of airlines have operated flights on a mix of biofuels and aviation fuels, including Air Canada which had a flight from Toronto to Mexico City to coincide with Rio+20. The pace of research and development into biofuels is expected to increase this year.

WITH A MONTH to go before the start of the Olympics in London, Heathrow Airport is bracing itself for the busiest period in its history. Some 240,000 passengers per day are expected to arrive around the opening and closing ceremonies, a 45 per cent increase on normal traffic.

The airport is already operating at 99.2 per cent capacity and there will be no additional flights. Instead airlines will be operating larger aircraft and at higher load factors. An extra 3,000 business aviation flights are expected into the London area during the games and slot allocation will have to be booked in advance from July 14th to August 15th.
