Labour affairs minister Mr Tom Kitt confirmed yesterday that a commencement order had been signed to bring into operation with immediate effect the Protection of Employees (Part-Time Work) Act, 2001. Mr Kitt said the Act provided for the removal of discrimination against part-time workers where it exists. The Act gives effect to EU Council Directive 97/81/EC on the framework agreement on part-time work adopted in 1997.
