Card spending down by 2% last week, Central Bank data shows

Total card spending in the week ending June 5th decreased by 2 per cent, or €44 million, when compared to the previous week, data from the Central Bank shows.

Total debit card point-of-sale spending increased by 2 per cent or €24 million, while ATM withdrawals increased by 7 per cent or €19 million in comparison to the previous week.

The other retail sector registered the largest week-on-week spending increase with 3 per cent (or €12 million), with accommodation, groceries, restaurants, and transport all recording a week-on-week spending increase.

Total card spending in the month of May was 22 per cent, or €1.4 billion, higher compared to May 2021.

The dataset consists of total daily debit and credit card spending and ATM withdrawals, while from October 1st, 2020, expenditure in a number of key sectors of the economy, and a split of online and in-store spending is also available.
