SOUTHAMPTON vice chairman Keith Wiseman yesterday landed the prestige post of Football Association chairman in succession to Sir Bert Millichip.

Sir Bert had stepped down after IS years in the job and Wiseman, a 51 year old solicitor, was voted in after a four cornered leadership battle.

Wiseman, a member of the subcommittee that appointed Glenn Hoddle as the new England coach, triumphed in a third ballot, polling 49 votes compared to 37 for Geoff Thompson, chairman of the FA's disciplinary committee.

It boiled down to a straight fight after merchant banker Sir David Hill Wood, Australia's representative on the council since 1978, and Sheffield Wednesday chairman David Richards lost out.
