Margaret Gilbourne took little solace from a recent round at Charleville

Margaret Gilbourne took little solace from a recent round at Charleville. A bad score perhaps? Head fell off her favourite putter? Not at all. She won the club's `Little Solace Cup' with an excellent return of 32 stableford points over 13 holes.

The Cup was presented by Patrick J Ball a breeder of thoroughbred horses who was feeling particularly generous after getting a good price for `Little Solace' in the RDS sales of 1949.

There's no end to the variety of names given to competitions around the country. Charleville and Woodbrook pull no punches in letting their higher handicap men contest the Scrubbers Cup and Plummers Cup respectively.

Age is always a concern with the women. There are no seniors or veterans in Edenderry, only `Golden Girls' and it's `Grannies' in Dun Laoghaire. They start them young in Laytown and Bettystown where the under-8s contest the Pee Wee Cup.
