Tragic death of young amateur

Irish racing was yesterday coming to terms with the death of the young amateur jockey Dary Cullen who was killed in a fall at a point-to-point in Wexford on Sunday.

The 20-year-old rider from Newbridge, Co Kildare took a fatal fall at the Bree Foxhounds point-to-point which was run at Wexford racecourse. He died later at Wexford Hospital.

"It's an absolute tragedy and our condolences go to his family. It's shattering to think of something like this happening," said the Turf Club chief executive Denis Egan last night.

Cullen, son of the former professional jockey Jimmy, had ridden one winner in his career and had worked for the Co Wexford-based trainer Paul Nolan.

He was riding My Hoby in the first division of the four and five-year-old mares maiden race when the horse fell at the second fence.
