Thompson toppers

Mabel Thompson, who plays her golf out of Beech Park golf club, and her son Ashley, who plays in Co Longford, will have every reason to remember 1998. They both won the Golfer of the Year trophies in their respective clubs, but for Mabel it was her sixth time to win the coveted trophy, while her son was winning his first in Longford. Mabel Thompson also had the distinction of appearing in her sixth matchplay final, but while she is a model of consistency over the year, her quest for the matchplay title has foundered at the final hurdle on each occasion. She won the Lady Captain's Prize in Beech Park in 1997, and was also a winner of the Lady Captain's Prize at Bodenstown some years ago.
