Sporting career: Although a moderate football career was brought to an end by a spinal injury when he was in his 20s, McCague went on to become his county's most successful manager winning three Ulster titles (1979, '85 and '88), one NFL (1985) and leading the county to the Centenary Cup final in 1984. He was assistant coach to Eugene McGee with the Ireland team in the International Rules series in Ireland (1987) and Australia (1990). He was also an excellent analyst on BBC Northern Ireland's television programme The Championship.

Administrative career: Having involved himself in his club's affairs, McCague rose to the position of county secretary at the remarkably young age of 24. After a couple of years in the post, he served on the Ulster council and in 1985 became Monaghan's delegate to Central Council. When Peter Quinn was elected president, he appointed McCague as chairman of the GAC in 1991. Since then, he has served as chairman of the Coaching and Games Development Committee (1994-99) and as chairman of the Policy and Planning Committee (1997 to date).
