JEFF SLUMAN finally ended a nine-year drought by taking the £800,000 PGA Tucson Classic in Arizona after firing a final-round 67 for a one stroke win over US Open champion Steve Jones.

Sluman admitted he had started to wonder if he would win another tournament after taking the PGA Championship in 1988. He said: "I got the monkey off my back finally."

"It was serious, no question about it. I didn't know if it would ever happen. I have come close before, but it finally worked out."

Sluman, who banks £160,000, finished with a 13-under par 275, while third round leader Brad Bryant was two strokes adrift after slumping to a one-over par 73.
