Highly-rated Israeli star Alon Mizrahi wrecked Glentoran's European hopes at the Oval last night. The 26-yearold international scored the goal which gives Maccabi Haifa a priceless advantage. Haifa, clever and inventive, could have won by a much more decisive margin, but might have been caught out during a spirited second-half Glentoran spell.
Midfielder Paul Leeman had a headed goal ruled out and chances were missed by centre forward Andy Kirk and midfielder Philip Mitchell. This strong surge salvaged some pride for Glentoran but the Israelis looked a class apart.
Hearts grabbed a vital away goal in Estonia last night. Lee Makel scored the winner in the 21st minute against Lantana Tallinn.
Manager Jim Jeffries expressed his satisfaction with the result afterwards. "I think we had much more class than they did and could possibly have scored another three goals," he said. "Now we will be looking for an early goal at Tynecastle in the return leg to put them under more pressure."
