Rangers coach Dick Advocaat has urged his side to find a nasty streak as they bid to extend their European campaign. The Ibrox club take on Borussia Dortmund in the UEFA Cup today still licking their wounds from their Champions League exit.
Advocaat feels his side are still some way short of challenging for the major honours and believes lessons must also be learned in their approach to matches.
"We are too kind sometimes," said the Dutchman. "Against Celtic, Jonatan Johansson went in on the goalkeeper, got a knock, went down and got straight back up again. If he had stayed down, the referee might have given a penalty," he said.
"If you feel you are not the better team, you use every trick to influence the referee."
With Michael Mols out for the season, Advocaat must decide whether to recall last season's top scorer Rod Wallace, who missed Saturday's 2-0 defeat of Hibernian with a hamstring injury. However, Johansson and Gabriel Amato have both impressed in recent weeks.
The Rangers manager has to solve a defensive crisis. Skipper Lorenzo Amoruso is suspended and possible centre-half deputies Sergio Porrini and Colin Hendry are both injured. Scott Wilson may be drafted in for his first game of the season or Tony Vidmar could step up from the bench.
