A fighting rearguard action by Glen Milnes - with prior assistance from Gary Black and subsequent aid from John Atkinson - gave Phoenix a thrilling three-wicket victory over The Hills in this bottom-of-the-table Whitney Moore and Keller-sponsored Section B League match in the Park yesterday.

Chasing The Hills' total of 220, Phoenix began comfortably as Jeremy Bray and Anu Bhandari put on 47 for the first wicket and Bhandari and Imran Masood added a further 50 runs for the second. At 182 for 6, Phoenix needed 39 to win off the last six overs.

But Milnes and Black brought the score to 198 before Black was out lbw to Luke Clinton. Atkinson held on and Milnes hit the winning runs with just five balls remaining; he faced 53 deliveries and hit six fours in a valiant undefeated 43.

Earlier, Mark Clinton was the game's top scorer with a 76 from 111 balls and including three sixes and three boundaries, while Barry Archer's 46 came off 83 deliveries with four fours. For Phoenix, Bhandari's 55 was invaluable, but Milnes was the real match-winner.
