Pair of aces

A hole in one is a novelty in most clubs. But in Arklow they celebrated on the double when two of their members had aces on the one day last Sunday. "I've been in charge of competitions for a long time now and I can't remember anything like this happening before," said competitions secretary Liam Byrne. Geoffrey Barry, who plays off nine, had his ace at the short ninth at around 11.20. Jimmy Tancred had holed out at the seventh just over an hour earlier. The celebrations went on late into the night.
