THE GALWAY SHC final between All-Ireland champions Portumna and Loughrea is set to go ahead this Sunday at Pearse Stadium in Salthill after three Mullagh players were given reduced sentences for the incidents which occurred with match referee Christy Helebert at the end of their controversial semi-final.
The players were facing 48-week bans for allegedly assaulting the match referee after they lost their semi-final clash to a controversial last-minute free.
The Co Galway Competition Controls Committee proposed a sanction of 48 weeks, but the three players requested personal hearings.
However, after a hearing that went on for most of the week, the players were found guilty of “minor” physical interference and “threatening and abusive behaviour” and were given the maximum 12-week suspension for the offences.
