Moran gets four-week suspension from CHC

NEWS ROUND-UP:DUBLIN'S COLIN Moran has received a four-week suspension from the GAA's Central Hearings Committee.

The disciplinary action was announced yesterday in respect of an incident between Moran and Westmeath's Dermot Bannon in last weekend's Leinster senior football semi-final for which the Dublin player received a yellow card.

At the request of the Central Competitions Control Committee, referee Pádraig Hughes reviewed the incident and said that he believed a red card would have been in order.

The CCCC recommended a four-week suspension, but Moran opted for a hearing and can now if he wishes take the matter to the Central Appeals Committee.

Bannon released a statement on Thursday night asking that the suspension not be imposed. Should the suspension stand the player will miss this month's Leinster final against Wexford.

Meanwhile, GAA President Nickey Brennan has extended his deepest sympathies and those of the association to the family and friends of Down referee Michael Cole, who died suddenly after collapsing while refereeing a Down senior football league game on Thursday evening.

As well as being a referee, the deceased had served as a councillor on Newry and Mourne District Council and was mayor for the past year.
