SEÁN CASEY booked his place in the C final (places 13 to 18) of the men’s single scull at the World Championships in Poznan in Poland yesterday. Casey finished in the second of the three qualification places available in the C/D semi-final.

India’s Bajrang Lai Takhar was the surprise early leader, but Mario Vekic of Croatia led by halfway and went on to win. Casey had made second place his own by 1,200 metres and Takhar eventually lost third to Chile’s Oscar Vasquez Ochoa of Chile.

The three qualifiers will be joined in tomorrow’s C final (10.48am Irish time) by Sergii Gryn of Ukraine, Peter Lambert of South Africa and Maksim Shauchenka of Belarus, who came through the other semi-final in that order.

Jueri Jaanson, who was slated to compete in this race, did not start.
