Madam, – Why exactly does Eoin O’Malley (February 1st) find Fintan O’Toole’s columns “pious”?
As far as I can see, Mr O’Toole generally advocates for greater probity in Irish public life and greater equality throughout Irish society. He uses well-reasoned arguments and backs up these arguments with pertinent facts.
He is, moreover, one of the few mainstream opinion-formers in the country who speaks from this standpoint, thereby adding by his mere presence to the health of political debate across the media. All this is so, whether one agrees with his views or otherwise. I can’t understand why he provokes such ire among some sections of Irish society.
What exactly is wrong with any of the above, and more particularly, what is so “pious” about it? – Yours, etc,
Madam, – Even politicians can hardly dispute that our political system has failed us and it seems will continue to do so. Fintan O’Toole’s first-class article (January 29th) says it all.
Mary O’Rourke’s facile comments about those who advocate some kind of change illustrate what we are up against. Maybe something will turn up to save us. – Yours, etc,
