Two-tier education system

Sir, – The Irish Times reported on the potential penalisation of some students due to the removal of historical school data from the grade calculation process (“Leaving Cert – removing school data risked penalising some students”, News, February 22nd).

Harry Deacon (Letters, February 26th) points out that this would discriminate against high-performing schools.

That may well be the case but I find it rather amusing that the concepts of unfairness, discrimination and unfair disadvantage lie at the centre of his argument.

Unfortunately these concepts form the basis of our two-tier education system. The system heavily favours those from wealthy backgrounds.

One can only hope that the sudden and vehement reliance on the concepts of fairness and discrimination will survive beyond the grades calculation issue. – Yours, etc,
