Sir, - So Dublin City is considering twinning with the city of Tiananmen Square. How horrible that the capital city of a nation with a folk memory of suffering under the Penal Laws could even contemplate liaison with an establishment guilty of religious and imperial persecution, notably in Tibet.
We did not twin with Johannesburg under apartheid. I believe the vast majority of Dubliners would prefer a city that cherished normal civil rights, and which, in order to promote such rights globally, might choose to associate with a municipality that was a victim, rather than a perpetrator, of injustice. - Yours, etc.,
