The state of our roads

Madam, – Aoife Smith gave a good account of the state of the roads in Wicklow (March 2nd). I can report they are not any better in Co Wexford.

Certainly with the tourist season approaching (not to mention the plight of us natives), action is urgently required. In the present economic climate I fear a call for central funding will fall on deaf ears.

I have suggested the following local solution. Assess the amount required, divide it by the number of vehicles registered in the county, impose the resultant figure as a levy on each registered vehicle.

It would not be popular but it would cost us a damn sight more if we have to replace tyres, suspensions, etc – and the potholes would remain. – Yours, etc,

JAMES MORAN,

Knockanure,

Bunclody,

Co Wexford.
