The price of water

Sir, – Some months ago now, I dutifully registered with Irish Water and dutifully signed off on a direct debit mandate – to make life easier for them. However, the direct debit mandate has not been activated to date, even though I have been billed. I am not alone in this situation, I understand.

Just recently I applied, online as preferred, for the water conservation grant. I now await with great interest to see whether the authorities (I use the term loosely) will be more efficient in paying me back money that I haven’t paid than they were at taking money from me that I was willing to pay. – Yours, etc,
