Sir, - Responding to the "confusion and fear" he sees in unionism today, the President of Sinn Fein, Mr Gerry Adams MP, told his party's ard fheis that "we must not allow our hurt make us insensitive to the hurt and pain of the unionists. We must make it clear," he said, "that we have no wish to dominate them in the way we were dominated in the past" (The Irish Times, April 20th).

This is easier said than done; but there is one appropriate first step that could immediately be taken, now that the marching season has arrived: that is, a public call by Mr Adams, either solely or on behalf of his party, for all residents' groups to allow loyal orders to march unhindered along disputed routes, provided the Parades Commission could reasonably guarantee that the marchers would not display any trappings of domination/ triumphalism as they passed through the specific area. - Yours, etc., James McGeever
