Sir, - Anyone who read Lorna Siggins (May 23rd) on the subject of the controversial development proposed for the beach at Strand Road, Sutton, Co Dublin, may be interested in the following update.
Having failed for over two years to get any active response from Fingal County Council in relation to the removal of illegally dumped rubble from the beach, the residents' association hired a JCB and began the task of removing the offending material and restoring the beach to its natural state - a case of a community coming together to rescue the environment from vandals.
Within one hour of starting work, Fingal County Council had an inspector on the spot and his intervention effectively scuppered this community initiative, and the beach remains severely damaged.
The utterly illogical action by Fingal County Council in granting planning permission for an extension to the sailing club cries out for an official explanation. We invite them to respond through your letters page. - Yours, etc.
