Singular And Plural

Sir, - I did a double take on your headline (The Irish Times, August 31st), "Schools not doing enough for a more plural society". Has not our society become obsessively plural? I'd have thought that if the schools did a bit more we'd have a less plural society.

What I half expected to find in the article that followed was something like: "What our schools must inculcate is that any, each or every pupil has their own true goal in life, individual but by no means singular. Each and every child should grow up knowing that their most important contribution to society is that they will always put political correctness before their grammar." I might add that no one should confuse their gender with their sex, since there are three of one and only two of the other. - Yours, etc.,
