Sir, - In his letter (April 11th), Mr Brian J. Dwyer wonders when the local authorities are going to get their act together and live up to their responsibilities to provide proper road signs.

In view of the fact that the great bulk of our signposting has not yet emerged from the era of the horse and buggy, and shows little sign of doing so, I would strongly advise Mr Dwyer not to hold his breath.

The sad reality is that signposting is now in such a mess it must be very doubtful if the haphazard efforts of local authorities are capable of ever bringing it up to modern standards. A well planned and carefully implemented national programme is the obvious solution. Perhaps some of those politicians, who are currently promising to spend our money on the sun, moon and stars, would come down to earth for a little while and direct their attention to this mundane but very necessary project. Yours, etc.,
