Sir, – How ironic that on the day the people of Waterford, and the southeast, marched in protest at further denudement of services from our city, you begin a series on how to embelish Dublin’s services further (Reinventing Dublin, November 10th) .

Our capital city is a wonderful asset and should be cherished and invested in. However, the long-forgotten National Spatial Strategy was introduced to ensure regional development as a counter-balance to Dublin’s previously unchecked growth.

It would be a great shame if the fire of our capital city’s ambitions were fuelled by sacrificing those of our oldest.

Starved of investment, denied a university and now facing the threat of acute medical services decamping the city and region, Waterford and the southeast have said; “Enough!”

Sir, – With the article, “How to build a better Dublin (Weekend Review, November 10th) the illustration presents “Oil Off Dalkey” as an opportunity.

Can anyone on the Irish Times editorial staff explain to your readers how oil in Dublin Bay can be presented as an opportunity for Dublin when all we stand to gain is a few dozen jobs, a mite in tax and a lot of social and environmental problems as Ireland no longer owns our oil or gas resources? There is a meeting on the issue scheduled for November 13th in Killiney Castle, Killiney at 8pm, if any of your readers seek clarification on the issues involved. – Yours, etc,
